Maratea, Marathia in marathon dialect, is an Italian town and comune of 5175 inhabitants, in the province of Potenza. It is the only comune of the region on the Tyrrhenian coast

For its beautiful scenery, coastline and for the artistic and historical peculiarities, Maratea is one of the main tourist destinations in the region, and it has been called "the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian".

Owing to the considerable number of its churches and chapels, built in different eras and styles, many of which represent a considerable artistic and religious heritage, it has also been described as "the town with 44 churches".

On December 10, 1990, the President of the Republic Francesco Cossiga, has awarded the town Maratea with the honorary title of "City", a title that the city was claiming since 1531 for the decree of Charles V of Asburgo.



From North
A3 Motorway Salerno-Reggio Calabria, exit Lagonegro Nord-Maratea, then take Strada statale 585 "Fondovalle del Noce" with 3 differents exits, that are three possible routes to reach Maratea:
Maratea North, with panoramic scenery, ideal to drive to the villages of Cersuta and Acquafredda; 
Maratea Center, via Trecchina, through beautiful chestnut woods, to get by car to the historic center
Crossing the neighboring village of Trecchina, you enter the city by “passo la colla”;
Maratea South, coming from State Road 585 in Castrocucco locations of Maratea, one continues along the State Route 18;

From South
You can either from the A3 motorway by exiting at Lauria South, joining on Provincial Road 3 and then on the Road SS 585, or by following theState Road 18 towards North.

From Puglia
From Taranto, follow the Ionian State Road until Policoro, then take the Sinnica Highway to Lauria. From Lauria follow the signs for Maratea.


The Maratea Station is located on the Rome-Naples-Reggio Calabria line. Numerous trains make stops at the station, Moreover, during the summer the service is enhanced. The nearest station stops with TAV is the Sapri station (is about 15 minutes). Consult the official website of the state railways for details.

Metro del Mare provides a hydrofoil service from the port of Naples - Beverello to the neighboring city of Sapri.
You can then reach Maratea from Sapri by bus, train or taxi.


The nearest airports are Napoli Capodichino (about 200 km) and Lamezia Terme (about 150 km).
